The Framework supports accessible footnote references using a simple authoring convention.
Creating a Footnote Reference
- Create an HTML Anchor on the footnote using the block Advanced panel.
- Name the anchor using the format
doc-footnote-#where#is a unique positive integer (e.g. doc-footnote-1). - Create a link from the footnote reference to the matching anchor.
About the Naming Convention
The doc-footnote-# naming convention is a Framework standard that allows footnote references and destinations to be recognized automatically during rendering. This enables the Framework to add consistent accessibility enhancements without requiring authors to manually manage ARIA attributes or additional markup.
Automatic Enhancement
When the Framework encounters a link whose destination matches the doc-footnote-# convention, it automatically enhances the rendered output. The Framework only enhances content that follows the doc-footnote-# naming convention. Other named anchors continue to behave as standard HTML fragment links.
This includes:
- identifying the reference as a footnote reference;
- identifying the destination as a footnote;
- generating an accessible name for the reference;
- preserving any manually supplied accessibility attributes.
These enhancements are applied automatically during rendering and do not modify the stored block content.
